On May 8th, the launch and implementation plan demonstration meeting of the "High Safety Lithium ion Power and Energy Storage Battery Key Materials and Applications" (2022YFB3803500) project, a key special project of the "14th Five Year Plan" National Key R&D Program "High end Function and Intelligent Materials" led by Tsinghua University, was successfully held at Qingtao (Kunshan) Energy Development Co., Ltd.

The National Key R&D Program is established by central government funding, targeting the forefront of world science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, and major national needs. It focuses on funding major social public welfare research that needs long-term evolution in fields such as agriculture, energy resources, ecological environment, and health that are related to national economy and people's livelihood. It involves strategic, fundamental, forward-looking major scientific issues related to industrial core competitiveness, overall independent innovation capabilities, national security, major common key technologies and product research and development, as well as major international scientific and technological cooperation. It strengthens cross departmental, cross industry, and cross regional R&D layout and collaborative innovation, providing sustained support and guidance for the main areas of national economy and social development.


Zhu Meifang, academician of Donghua University, was employed as the leader of the project demonstration expert group for the project launch and implementation scheme demonstration meeting, Huang Yunhui, professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, as the project responsibility expert, Guo Yuguo, researcher of the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hu Yongsheng, researcher of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Yu Yan, professor of the University of Science and Technology of China, as the project demonstration technical expert. More than 40 people, including Shi Mengjia, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Bureau of Kunshan Development Zone, Cao Lipeng, Major Project Manager of the Research Institute of Tsinghua University, project leaders, and project backbone, attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Professor Shen Yang, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Science and Technology of Tsinghua University, who was the project leader.

This project is led by Tsinghua University and jointly undertaken by Wuhan University of Technology, Donghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing University of Science and Technology, Suzhou University, Chongqing Innovation Center of Beijing University of Technology, Suzhou Qingtao New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Nalinwei Nano Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Rouzhen Technology Co., Ltd. The ultimate goal of this project is to achieve the integration verification and application demonstration of high safety lithium-ion batteries. Basic research and key technology breakthroughs will be carried out from the aspects of battery detection and warning technology, solid electrolytes, high safety and heat-resistant separators, composite current collectors, battery integration systems, etc. The project will explore the mechanism of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, construct a technical system related to lithium-ion battery safety, clarify the impact mechanism of key materials on battery safety, and guide its research and development; Breaking through key materials such as solid electrolytes, heat-resistant separators, and composite collectors, achieving large-scale production of heat-resistant separators and composite collectors; Optimize the design and manufacturing process of high safety lithium-ion batteries, integrate the safety battery materials developed in this project into intrinsic safety batteries, and achieve application demonstrations.

During the meeting, the project leader and each sub project leader presented a detailed report on the project implementation plan. After listening to the report on the project and project implementation plan, the project experts fully affirmed the project content and implementation plan. At the same time, the attending experts provided important guidance and opinions on the research system of the project, cooperation and exchange between topics, and refinement of research objectives. Experts point out that the project team has strong research capabilities and hopes to closely collaborate among various topics, strictly follow the management requirements of the national key research and development plan, carry out project research, jointly solve key scientific and technical problems, promote the development of key materials for high safety lithium-ion batteries, and establish and improve the application system, thereby improving the safety and environmental protection of energy storage and power batteries. Finally, after strict argumentation and questioning by the expert group, the implementation plan of the project was unanimously approved.



As a global leader in the industrialization of solid-state lithium batteries, Qingtao Energy focuses on the industrial transformation of cutting-edge new energy material technologies. Through the original development of key materials for lithium batteries, innovative design of equipment, and optimization of mass production processes, it has taken the lead in achieving the industrialization of solid-state lithium batteries. As a participating unit of this project, Qingtao Energy will conduct research on the integration and application verification of intrinsic safety power and energy storage batteries. The goal is to develop power and energy storage batteries that balance high energy density and high safety, and achieve the application verification of batteries.



During the conference, experts also visited the Qingtao Energy Exhibition Hall and the SAIC-Qingtao Solid State Battery Joint Laboratory for guidance and detailed understanding of Qingtao's solid-state lithium battery technology and industrialization status.

Battery is a fundamental product of the national economy, widely used in various fields such as transportation, communication, electricity, railways, computers, emergency equipment, etc. With the development of economy and technology, the demand for batteries in the entire industry is constantly increasing, and their application areas are expanding. With the establishment and improvement of the development and application system of key materials for high safety lithium-ion batteries in this project, the safety and environmental protection of energy storage and power batteries will be further improved, and it is expected to form a new resource-saving circular development industry, significantly reduce the use of fossil energy, and assist in the leapfrog development of low-carbon industries such as new energy vehicles and energy storage.
